Setting up Postmark

Andrija Krstic Updated by Andrija Krstic

Postmark is an email delivery service which helps tracking your emails open rate, managing your blocked and whitelists and making sure that the emails are delivered on time and to the correct mailbox.

Postmark integration is available only on Advanced plan. You can check the Subbly pricing page and feature matrix here for more information.

Why should I use Postmark?

Indeed, why should you use an external email delivery system when Subbly already has an Emails app built into the platform (and available on any plan)?

Answer to this one is very easy. With Subbly's built-in app, all customer emails are sent through Subbly's email address (customer-notifications@subbly.co). This doesn't reflect well on how professional your business is. For sure, you'd want your customers to receive emails from your store from your own business address, right?

Well, that's what Postmark integration will do for you. You will be able to use your own email address in order for Subbly to send transactional emails through your dedicated email address.

Postmark is an external app to Subbly and has its own pricing. You can check Postmark's pricing page here. Please note that Postmark does have a free plan which is limited to 100 emails sent per month.
To keep yourself within these limits, you might want to enable only emails that are absolutely necessary to be sent from Subbly. You can keep the emails sent to your customers at bare minimum to keep the costs down until you scale while keeping the customer communication completely professional and through your business email address.

Setting up Postmark

In order to properly setup Postmark and connect it to your Subbly account you first need to have an active Postmark account. If you don't have one already, please head over here and sign up for their trial.

When setting up the account with Postmark, you need to make sure that you've requested the approval for going live with the account. Without this, your Postmark account will stay in test mode and you won't be able to use it the way it's meant to be used. Once signed up and once the domain was added, you can request to be approved by clicking the CTA button located in the header of your Postmark admin.

After you've setup your Postmark account, go to Integrations section inside your Subbly dashboard, scroll down until you see the Postmark app integration and click to Install & Configure.

Clicking the button will invoke the sidebar widget where you need to provide 2 things: API Key (taken from Postmark admin) and you'll need to specify the email address which will be used for sending the transactional and marketing emails from your Subbly admin (you can have more than 1 email attached to Postmark, please specify one of them).

If you're not sure where to find the server API tokens inside your Postmark account, please check the instructions here.

After you've populated both of these fields, make sure to enable the integration and save the changes and you're good to go!

FAQ

Should I use Sendgrid or Postmark?

Your choice! Both tools are excellent but there are no hidden perks of integrating one over the other. You can even have both of these integrated at the same time.

What happens if I have both Sendgrid or Postmark integrations enabled? Who will be sending my emails then?

If you have both Sendgrid and Postmark integrations active Subbly will push sending transactional emails through Postmark and only marketing emails will be sent through Sendgrid. If you have only one of these integrations active, both transactional and marketing emails will be sent through the active integration.

Only cart abandonment email sequences are considered as marketing emails on Subbly. All other emails are considered as transactional (including the ones potentially sent through Automations).

Do I need to set webhooks or anything on Postmark in order for the emails to be sent?

No, the integration is handling this for you! All you need to do is follow simple setup steps explained above.

What happens if my Postmark integration/account hasn't been setup correctly? Will the emails be sent at all?

If Subbly receives an error from Postmark because something has been misconfigured inside your Postmark admin and the emails are not being sent due to it, Subbly will automatically revert back to the default setup and the emails will be sent through Subbly's default customer-notifications@subbly.co email address.
