How does the ShipStation integration work?

Subbly has an integration with ShipStation which makes handling shipping a breeze. This article will provide a bit more insight into how the integration with Shipstation is actually working on the backend.

What is Shipstation?

Shipstation is a platform that makes it super easy to generate shipping labels and to connect with multiple shipping providers (carriers), like USPS for example.

Once your orders are inside ShipStation you can get quotes from the connected carriers for shipping based on the address and the product and you can pick the best rate to then generate a shipping label. It also comes with other advanced features like metrics and statistics to help your fulfillment team run a smooth operation.

ShipStation can also help bridge the gap between your Subbly store and a 3PL or 3rd party fulfillment center if you have decided to outsource your shipments.

Please note that we can offer documentation to the orders API if you want to streamline this process further without having to use any external integrations such as this one. Contact our support team if you need more info about this.

ShipStation charges a monthly fee based on your volume of shipments. You can check their current pricing HERE

How does the integration work?

Once you have successfully signed up to ShipStation and connected Subbly with ShipStation, you will have a full-circle integration. The flow works like this:

  • When your pending orders reach the shipping date, they will be automatically pulled into your orders section on your Shipstation. Order slips will show information about the customer and the product and their customizations associated with the order if applicable.
  • Once you are ready to ship you can select the orders you want to ship all at once and then generate shipping labels based on the current rates from your connected carriers.
  • Once the labels are successfully generated ShipStation will notify Subbly that your order has been shipped.
  • Subbly will automatically mark the relevant order(s) as Shipped
  • Subbly will email your customer to notify them that their order is on the way. If there is any available tracking information, we will send that to your customer as well, as part of the Order Shipped email.

FAQs

FAQs below are an important consideration if you're using inventory tracking to map your product's SKUs. Please make sure you read these if you're using inventory tracking.

Do I need SKUs to all my products while using Shipstation?

Not necessarily. If you don't have SKUs attached to any of your products, Subbly will send over Product information as-is, and will fetch product details from the product setup instead of inventory. But if you have SKU attached to some of your products and not for the rest, it might cause some issues. For example in orders where there is one product that has SKU attached, and another where there is no SKU from inventory attached to it, it won't send the second product to Shipstation, and will only send the product with an SKU attached to it as a line item for the order. So in case you're using Shipstation for shipping, don't add SKUs to any products, or if you need it for some products, add it to all of them.

Are coupons sent to Shipstation?

If orders have coupons added to them in Subbly, the coupons themselves aren't added as part of the order when sent to Shipstation. Order total should still reflect the correct total, but the coupon won't show as part of the shipment.

Is it possible to change Shipping items from Subbly and have it updated in Shipstation?

It is indeed possible to change/update shipping items within an order on Subbly after it's been marked shipped, but these changes won't be updated to the order in Shipstation.
