Subscribe and Save bundles

Dusan Videnovic Updated by Dusan Videnovic

Bundles allow you to bundle multiple one-time products to create a unique build your box type of experience for your customers. There are different types of bundles - fixed (preset), Subsrbe and Save model and customizable. This article explains the usability and the setup of Subsribe and Save model.

What is a subscribe and save bundle?

The Subscribe and Save Bundle is a specialized type of bundle in Subbly that allows customers to either purchase a product once or subscribe to receive it on a recurring basis (e.g., weekly, monthly, bi-monthly) — with optional discounts for subscriptions. This is ideal for consumable products like coffee, supplements, pet food, and more.

The Subscribe and Save bundle type is available exclusively on the Advanced Plan. You can preview and configure it on other plans, but to make it available for purchase, you'll need to upgrade.

Use Case: Coffee Subscription Example

A great use case for this bundle type is a coffee subscription service. In the video, we demonstrated how a roastery can offer customers the ability to choose:

  1. The size of the coffee bag (e.g. 250g or 1kg)
  2. The grind type (e.g. whole beans, espresso, cold brew, etc.)
  3. The delivery frequency (one-time, weekly, monthly, or bi-monthly)

This bundle type allows businesses to offer discounted pricing for subscribers (e.g. 10 off), while still allowing one-time purchases without a discount.

Step 1: Create the Base Product (One-time Product)

Before setting up the bundle, you must first create the base product with its variants.

  1. Navigate to Products > One-time products.
  2. Create a new product (e.g. Bold Blend).
  3. Add a description and image.
  4. Enable Variants, and define the options:
    • Size: 250g, 1kg
    • Grind Type: Whole Beans, Espresso, Stovetop, Pour Over, French Press, Moccamaster/Home Drip, Cold Brew
  5. Subbly will automatically generate all variant combinations (e.g. 250g + Cold Brew).
  6. Click on "Show all generated variants" and assign prices for each variant combination:
    • e.g. $20 for 250g, $59 for 1kg across all grind types
  7. (Optional) Generate inventory SKUs automatically using the toggle.
  8. Click Save and Publish.
For more details on creating one-time products and working with tags and attributes, refer to our help article.

Step 2: Create the Subscribe and Save Bundle

  1. Go to Bundles > Create New Bundle.
  2. Name your bundle (e.g. Bold Blend).
  3. Select the “Subscribe and Save” bundle type and click on Save.

In the Settings section, add your custom bundle image.

In the Products section, add the one-time product you previously created.

  • You’ll see a price range displayed based on the variants (e.g. $20–$59).

Finally, set up the Pricing options for the bundle.

  1. You can choose between 3 different pricing models, but for this specific case, I went with the “Percentage Discount” option
  2. Add multiple delivery plans:

One-time Purchase: 0% discount

Weekly Subscription: 10% off

Monthly Subscription: 10% off

Bi-monthly Subscription: 15% off

In this example, we choose Independent Payments for fulfillment. However, for more info on how to setup your subscription product and which plan to choose based on your needs, please refer to this article.

After finishing with the configuration, don't forget to click on Save & Publish.

This is how it is going to be displayed for your customers at the checkout:

Changing the plan will also update your product summary based on the percentage discount configured:

Displaying the Bundle on your website

Once your Subscribe and Save bundle is ready, you can display it on your site in two ways, just like with Fixed Bundles:

Option 1: Filter by Tag (Recommended)

  1. Go to your website builder on your Subbly admin.
  2. Drag in the Products Element.
  3. Use the Filter by Tag option.
  4. Select the tag (e.g., "subscribe and save").
Make sure that you previously tagged your Bundle with the tag name in order to filter it successfully on your site:
Refer to our article about Attributes and Tags if you need help with creating tags for your products by clicking here.

This option will display only the products with the selected tag, in this example "Subscribe and save"

Option 2: Custom product layout

  1. Use custom blocks with:
    • Image
    • Title
    • Description
    • Button
  2. Link the bundle checkout URL to the button (get it from the bundle settings).
Please refer to this video tutorial for the step-by-step guide on how to use the custom product layout option for displaying your products.
