When to Start a New Chat

Andrija Krstic Updated by Andrija Krstic

This article introduces the concept of a context window and explains when and why it’s best to start a new chat while working on a project.

Context window

Context window is defined as the amount of information the agent sees and can refer to when processing the interpreting prompts in the current chat. Think of it as the agent's short-term memory.

This doesn't mean that you need to re-supply some general instructions to an agent anytime you start a new chat. Lots of information can be front-loaded via Instructions inside Project Settings. Use that to front-load information such as general layout and style of the build, font families and color palette used, so you don't have to remind an agent to stick with those information on every new chat.
Context window is finite and Subbly's AI builder has built-in limits of information that an agent can process inside given chat. This is mainly because of technical and performance limits all AI models have. This is why Subbly's AI builder will always prompt you to start the new chat when you're approaching the memory limit within given chat.

Users should start a new chat for two main reasons:

  1. To stay organized: Keeping different parts of the project in separate chats makes it easier to backtrack and make changes later.
  2. When the system asks you to: This happens if you’re getting close to the memory limit in the current chat.

Better organization of the project

In cases where we're dealing with some more complex projects, it is recommended that we create a separate chat for every different body of work we're working on inside the project.

In the context of building the site, think about creating a different chat for different pages of the site, or different chats for different sections of the same page (hero section, how it works section, footer section...).

When starting new chats for different parts of your project, it’s important to use a consistent naming convention so you can easily backtrack later. Keeping chats organized is key, and it’s recommended to rename each one. You can rename the current chat directly from Project Settings, as shown in the image below.

Approaching conversation memory limit

When the context window in a chat becomes too large, the system will prompt you to start a new chat. Ignoring this may lead to higher credit usage (since the AI has to process more information with each prompt) and longer response times of an agent.

Number of prompts it takes to reach the memory limit can vary, depending on their complexity. With more complex prompts, the limit is often reached after just a few prompts.
