Setting up SEPA payments

Dusan Videnovic Updated by Dusan Videnovic

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) payments are a popular payment method in Europe that allows easy, low-cost bank transfers in euros between participating countries. In this guide, we’ll show you how to set up SEPA payments on your Subbly store via Stripe and cover a few key considerations.

1. What are SEPA payments and how do they work?

SEPA payments allow customers from the EU, Norway, Switzerland, and other supported countries to pay using their IBAN (International Bank Account Number). These payments are:

  • Low-cost or free, depending on the country
  • Commonly used in Europe for subscriptions and one-time purchases
  • Processed through direct debits, credit transfers, or card payments

SEPA is supported on Subbly through Stripe integration, enabling your customers to choose this method during checkout.

2. Setting up SEPA payments through Stripe

Here’s how to enable SEPA Direct Debit on your Subbly store:

  1. Go to your Stripe Dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Payments > Payment Methods.
  3. Locate SEPA Direct Debit and toggle it on.
  4. Also enable iDEAL and make sure to enable the recurring payments toggle, as SEPA uses iDEAL for recurring billing through Subbly.
iDEAL and SEPA must both be enabled for recurring payments to function properly on Subbly.

3. How does it work at the checkout?

At checkout, your customer will be asked to provide:

  • Full Name
  • Email Address
  • IBAN
  • Country/Region
  • Billing Address

Once submitted, the SEPA Direct Debit is initiated and processed through Stripe.

Invoice Status and Payment Confirmation:

4. Important considerations

  • After the customer checks out, the invoice will appear as “Open” in Subbly.
  • SEPA payments take a few days to process, as banks need time to confirm the payment. This usually takes 24-48 hours, but depending on the bank, it can be longer as well. Some banks send these types of payments in bulk once a week; therefore, it can also arrive a bit later.
  • Once Stripe confirms the payment on your Stripe account, you’ll need to manually mark the invoice as Paid in Subbly.
  • After marking it as paid, the subscription and order are created and processed automatically.
Open invoices cannot be voided or cancelled while waiting for SEPA payment confirmation.
